Black Women CARE: Engaging Black Women with Lived Experience in Research Studies: Recommendations to Researchers
May 20, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Are you asking the wrong people the wrong questions?
Black people continue to face inequities in the health system, and their lived experiences are often excluded from research. In particular, Black women with lived experience of substance use and incarceration have often been underrepresented and even harmed through research studies.
The research community can change this, and recent findings from the Black Women Consulting to Advance Addiction Research and Engagement (CARE) project offer a roadmap to make that change possible. The project’s recommendations are a huge step forward in bringing an often overlooked and underrepresented community to the table so researchers can ensure their studies better inform a more equitable health system.
After sharing this experience, you will be able to:
· Explain barriers to research study involvement experienced by Black women with lived experience of substance use disorder and criminal legal system involvement
· Identify engagement approaches that overcome barriers
· Design research studies that invite the participation of this population
· Utilize the help of the Black Women Consulting Corps
